PLAY ON THE LIFE OF BHAGWAN BIRSA MUNDA
The Directorate of Art & Culture, govt. of Goa was showcased the play “ULGULAN” on the life of Bhagwan Birsa Munda. The said event was organised as a part of Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh to mark the 150th Birth Anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda in association with Ministry of Tribal Affairs, New Delhi, Directorate of Tribal Welfare, Govt. of Goa & Tribal Research Institute, Goa. The play was showcased at Rajiv Gandhi Kala Mandir, Ponda Goa on 15th April 2025 at 3.30 p.m. onwards.
This event was supported by Ministry of Tribal Affairs Government of India, New Delhi under the scheme ‘Support to Tribal Research Institute’ initiative.
The drama “Ulgulan” based on the life of Bhagwan Birsa Munda in Konkani Language was performed by the drama group namely “Gururang” from Pisgal – Priol, Mardol – Goa. The drama was written by Shri. Hrishikesh Sulabh in hindi language namely “Dharthi Abha” which was translated in Konkani Language by Shri. Vaibhav Kavlekar as “Ulgulan”, The drama was directed by Shri. Shrikant Gaude Asstt. Professor at College of Theatre Art with team of 40 Artists. The duration of drama was 2 hrs.
This event aimed to honor the legacy of Birsa Munda, a prominent tribal leader and folk hero who played a crucial role in India’s struggle for independence and the rights of tribal communities. The play, which focused on the life and contributions of Birsa Munda, was performed in front of an enthusiastic audience comprising approximately 500 attendees.
This event marked a significant step towards recognizing and celebrating tribal heritage in Goa, by showcasing a play on Birsa Munda’s life, it reinforced the values he stood for- empowerment, resilience, and community spirit. Such initiatives are vital for fostering awareness among younger generations about their roots and inspiring them to carry forward his legacy. The play was very much appreciated by teachers & students who were present during the play and also requested that same can be shown to other school students to get them motivated by the work of Birsa Munda. In summary, the play commemorating Birsa Munda’s 150th birth anniversary successfully engaged students and teachers alike, promoting cultural awareness and appreciation within the community.
