Date

29 Jan, 2026

Project Brief:

The proposed Tribal Museum at Ponda aims to serve as a tribute to the unsung heroes of Goa’s tribal freedom fighters by preserving and showcasing their legacy through documented narratives, oral histories, and cultural artefacts. It seeks to create a dedicated space that safeguards indigenous heritage while making it accessible to future generations. The project also focuses on promoting awareness, appreciation, and pride in tribal culture among the wider community. By doing so, it aspires to strengthen cultural identity and foster a deeper connection to tribal roots and history.

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, has sanctioned the establishment of 11 Tribal Freedom Fighters’ Museums (TFFMs) across 10 states. The projects are being funded under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme “Support to Tribal Research Institute.” Among the selected states, Goa is one of the states where a Tribal Freedom Fighters’ Museum is proposed to be established at Ponda, further reinforcing the state’s commitment to preserving and promoting its tribal heritage.

Objectives:
  • To recognize and preserve the legacy of Goa’s tribal freedom fighters as a tribute to the unsung heroes through documented narratives, oral histories, and cultural artefacts.
  • To collect, conserve, and exhibit the cultural heritage, traditions, and indigenous knowledge of tribal communities.
  • To promote awareness, appreciation, and pride in tribal heritage while strengthening cultural identity within the community.
  • To undertake in-depth research and documentation of the 54 Tribal Freedom Fighters, including the collection and compilation of their life stories and contributions.
Expected outcomes:
  • Increased awareness of Goa’s tribal culture, lifestyle, and role in the freedom struggle through immersive exhibits.
  • Recognition and preservation of the legacy of tribal freedom fighters as unsung heroes.
  • Strengthened cultural identity and pride among tribal communities.
